Dog Star 14 : Tunnel Music

  • Mueller Tunnel, San Gabriel Mountains (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Heather Lockie's site-specific new work for 7 vocalists - 'Song to be Performed in a Tunnel in Your Town'.

Mueller Tunnel provides a stark shady contrast to this sunny, quiet mountainous environment. It stands out as an anomalous presence in these mountains, and people walking through the tunnel on their way to the Mt. Lowe trail frequently holler, or hum, or sing. This performance is a distillation of those natural tendencies.

Come early or stay after the performance, to hike this easy/moderate trail up to beautiful Mt. Lowe overlook, from where you can see from San Pedro harbor and the ocean (if the day is clear), to San Bernardino horizon, to the surrounding Angeles Crest Mountains.

This concert is free.

RIVER SONG QUINTET / DAVID BAKER / MIWA MATREYEK AT REDCAT

Roy and Edna Disney CalArts Theater

631 WEST 2ND STREET
LOS ANGELES, CA 90012

tickets here

As spellbinding as it is poignant, this double bill of multidisciplinary performance features a deeply resonant collaboration between L.A.’s River Song Quintet and Ohio poet David Baker, and a dreamlike multimedia work by artist Miwa Matreyek, who blends fantastical animation with live shadow play. River Song and Baker offers three iterations of music composed by guitarist Gregory Uhlmann in combination with lyric text by the poet: a semi-improvised interplay of guitar and spoken word; a six-movement art song setting of poems by Baker; and a reading of Scavenger Loop—Baker’s eco-poetic Midwestern elegy—with a score performed by the quintet. Matreyek’sThis World Made Itself, a signature solo piece that seamlessly merges projected kaleidoscopic vistas with intricate shadow theater enacted by the artist herself.

OperaWorks' Arts for Social Awareness Project (ASAP) is a series of productions created to bring awareness to current social issues through live musical-dramatic productions in intimate theater spaces.  Our purpose for these productions is not to moralize, but rather to raise awareness on social issues beyond what we get from the media or political sources.  "The Discord Altar" is the first installment of this series, and will premier at the Secret Rose Theater in North Hollywood on April 10, 2015.
